Executive Summary

In fall 2009, Microsoft revealed its SharePoint Server 2010 functional road map, which included Web content management (WCM) support. Traditionally, more organizations have used SharePoint for portal, internal content management and collaboration capabilities rather than public-facing Web sites. But given the volatility in the WCM market and the failure of some first-generation WCM implementations, some enterprises that are already using SharePoint in other areas explored it as an alternative solution for supporting public-facing Web sites. As a result, Microsoft has beefed up WCM functionality for SharePoint 2010. While point solutions still better support high-end persuasive Web experiences, SharePoint can meet midlevel WCM needs with improved support for content authoring, rich media, and metadata.
